I read the original STIRP team report circa 1979 and I've believed it was real since then. The Oxford team was paid £1 million to disprove it in the 1980s and they were the ones who gave the wrong date from the newer piece of cloth (medieval hem on the edge). As far as I know the STIRP team tested the pollen and material and it was proved back then that the pollen only came from the Middle East and the age of the cloth was about 2000 years old. The vatican steam cleaned the cloth (!) some years back so further carbon dating is no longer possible.
